Joya Child & Family Development

Joya serves children with special needs from birth to age three. Their program provides comprehensive pediatric evaluations, therapy, education, and support to help each child achieve their fullest potential.

The heart and soul of the landscape is the specialized and fully accessible playscape!  Here, kids discover countless opportunities to engage in imaginative play, exploration, and therapies with Joya staff.  Playscape features include spinners, swings with bucket seats for support, embankment slides, log clusters and climbers, talking tubes, raised-bed gardens overflowing with sensory plants, and a sensory path composed of hand-placed river rock, flagstone, pavers, and log “cookie” rounds.  Colorful poured-in-place resilient surfacing provides critical fall protection, while large shade sails spanning the embankment slides, log cluster/climbers, and swings offer protection from the elements.

The playscape uses the natural topography, incorporating grass hills for rolling and wide, undulating concrete pathways for wheelchairs and trikes.

Mature existing conifers along Superior Street were preserved, along with the riparian buffer between the project site and the Spokane River.  The new landscaping features colorful trees, shrubs, and perennials that provide year-round visual interest to the site.
