University District Gateway Bridge

The University District Gateway Bridge links Spokane’s south university district with the campuses of WSU, Whitworth University, Eastern Washington University, and Gonzaga University. Working closely with campus staff, city engineers, the University District Board, and the general public, the SPVV design team was responsible for integrating both bridge landings into the surrounding landscape. The design integration includes alternative modes of transportation, public art, and bicycle circulation routes. Key elements are the circulation and serpentine egress on both landings, grand stair cases at both landings that allow the ascent and descent of the pedestrian user to access the bridge crossing, safe and well-lighted routes of travel, and travel ways that are easy to maintain.
